Oppenheimer, J Robert

Oppenheimer, J Robert
1904–1967
In 1936 Oppenheimer was a professor of atomic or nuclear physics at the University of California. In 1942 when the USA joined the war he was appointed Director of the government laboratory at Los Alamos and Head of the team which was to build the first atomic bomb. A dynamic leader with a brilliant mind, Oppenheimer was able to complete his project in time to use it against Japan. Some have argued that this was done in the ‘nick of time’ as many lives were spared because the Allies did not have to invade the Home Islands.
